For the people who live here, the San Juan Islands are paradise. The area’s beauty, small vibrant communities and pristine environment make for one of the most precious places to live or visit in the world.
But, it’s no accident that we can call our home “paradise”. People here are committed to preserving the character and the ecological health of the islands and marine environment. The many stewardship groups and agencies based in the islands are evidence of this. These diverse groups use a variety of methods (education, land conservation, science, research and more) to protect or improve the wide variety of habitats and communities here. These groups grew from the personal environmental ethic here and serve to provide structure and information to help all of us to keep the San Juan Islands a paradise.
To help showcase the conservation efforts of these groups and agencies and to provide a forum for public interaction, the Stewardship Network of the San Juans is hosting its inaugural Conservation Summit, on April 19, 2008 at the Lopez Center. The first-ever winners of the San Juan Islands Good Steward Awards will also be announced at the Summit.
