Stewardship  Connections

San Juan County

Spring 2008

In 2004, San Juan County established the entire San Juan archipelago as a Marine Stewardship Area.  Our community has been moving towards a healthy and sustainable future for fish, wildlife and people in the Marine Stewardship Area through work of the Critical Areas Ordinance Update, the Marine Resources Committee, Salmon Recovery Program and the San Juan Initiative. These four groups are working in collaboration with each other and with the community to effectively steward the natural resources of San Juan County by protecting what is pristine, restoring what is damaged and creating sound management practices to minimize human impacts.  For this vision to succeed, every resident, visitor and business owner must be involved.  The purpose of the newsletter is to help citizens become informed and engaged stewards.

“For this vision to succeed, every resident, visitor and business owner must be involved.”

“The top salmon recovery goal for San Juan County is the protection of high quality nearshore marine habitat. In order to meet that goal, the County still needs important information to help prioritize restoration and protection activities. The nearshore waters in the County provide important migration, rearing and feeding habitats for salmonids, yet we still don’t have complete information on how the system functions.” READ MORE>Big_Picture.html

“ Though much work is still to be done, it is clear from the work completed to date that San Juan County still has a significant amount of relatively pristine habitat that is important to animals struggling to survive. We are lucky to be in the position of being able to prevent habitat loss rather than trying to re-create it.” READ MORE>CAO_Update.html

“ A major oil spill in the San Juans would be devastating to marine life. It is also a very real threat. Ships transport almost 16 billion gallons of crude oil and refined petroleum through our waters every year. New container ships carry up to 3.8 million gallons of fuel while oil tankers carry up to 40 million gallons.” READ MORE>Oil_Spill.html

“Recovery of bottomfish has been a goal of the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee since it was created twelve years ago. This has been a challenging and elusive goal to achieve. Faced with new information conducted in the reserves and adjacent areas indicating that rockfish populations are not improving, the MRC is leading efforts to revise its approach for bottomfish recovery” READ MORE>Bottomfish.html

“ San Juan County’s economy and quality of life depends on keeping the environment healthy and beautiful. Business owners and contractors are in key positions to protect this investment by running their businesses in a way that preserves the natural, cultural and economic resources on which we depend.” READ MORE>Sustainable_Biz.html
